SAVANNAH, Ga. -- When Matthew Davis came out of a coma, he did not know that he had been in a serious motorcycle accident weeks earlier. He did not remember anything from the past three years, including the death of his father ... and his own wedding.

Matt's wife, Danielle, had refused to pull the plug after doctors advised her to do so nine days after his accident, saying that the odds were not good.

Matt, 22, and Danielle had been married seven months prior to the accident, which was in July 2011. In addition to fractured bones all over his body, Matt had Severe Diffuse Axonal Injury, a widespread injury to the brain that sends most people into a permanent vegetative state. Danielle said she weighed the odds in her decision.

"This was a difficult choice for me, being his wife I knew that he did not want to remain a vegetable and here the doctors were telling me that's exactly what will happen," she wrote on her blog. "I prayed a lot and choose not to take him off of life support. The next day Matthew opened his eyes."

But that was just the beginning, she explained, as she learned that he was still in a vegetative state. Matt was sent home, where Danielle and her mother cared for him 24/7. Against all odds, he slowly improved.

The real break-through, Danielle wrote, came about three months after the accident, when Matt finally spoke.

"I'm trying," he said.

Four years later, Matt is still in the process of recovery, learning to walk and take care of himself again. Just as important, his wife told ABC News, he is becoming himself again. She knew this was happening one day when she asked him what he wanted to eat, and he responded with his favorite food.

"I kid you not, he says, 'buffalo chicken wrap from Cheddar's,'" she said. "We all whipped around because we all knew what he said."

Matt is slowly learning to do ordinary tasks that Danielle and her mother once did for him, and Danielle writes about it on their Facebook page.

Danielle writes about their faith and their relationship. She shares their little moments of triumph and fun, like visiting Disney World last summer.

Danielle writes often how thankful the couple is to have each other. Matt even writes Danielle love songs that she shares with their fans.

"I'm sure glad I married her," he told ABC News.
